California Department of Justice (DOJ) Voluntary Firearm Registration / Firearm Ownership Record

There is a form that can be filled out and submitted to the California DOJ to voluntary register any firearm (AW excluded) with the DOJ. The form is often called "Vol Reg."

  • Having a Firearm Ownership Record on file with the DOJ may help in the return of your firearm if it is lost or stolen.
  • It may also help you if you find yourself accused of CCW without a license. The crime of CCW without license is a misdemeanor if the concealed weapon is registered to the accused, and felony if it is not registered or registered to someone else.
